Police: Georgetown robbery suspects pistol-whipped victim after taking money

Niles Mumford, 22, of Delmar, Del. and Marcel Matthews, 22, of Millsboro, Del.

Georgetown Police say they arrested two men who allegedly robbed and assaulted someone early Tuesday morning.

At around 1 AM, Georgetown Police say they responded to reports of an assault on Albury Avenue. Police learned two suspects wearing black clothing and masks had just fled the scene.

En route to the call, police say they saw two subjects on East Market Street who matched the descriptions.

Niles Mumford of Delmar, Del. And Marcel Matthews of Millsboro, both 22, were arrested without incident, police said.

Police say Mumford and Matthews approached the victim on Albury Avenue and brandished a black handgun. They reportedly demanded money, then pistol-whipped the victim after they took the victim's wallet.

The two suspects then reportedly forced the victim at gunpoint to walk into a nearby yard and lie facedown on the ground. There, police say they struck the victim twice more on the head with the handgun.

Both Mumford and Matthews are charged with first degree robbery, possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony, wearing a disguise during the commission of a felony, possession of a firearm by a person prohibited, tampering with evidence and second degree conspiracy.

Each has been committed to Sussex Correctional Institution on $150,000 bond.
