(AP) – Lt. Gov. Ralph Northam is blasting Republicans for stripping money out of the state budget aimed at helping low-income women obtain intrauterine devices for birth control.

Northam and fellow Democrats spoke at a Monday news conference in support of a federal pilot program that provides long-lasting contraceptives.

The lieutenant governor, who is also a doctor and candidate for governor, said Republican lawmakers should quit trying to impose themselves on private women's health issues.

Northam has made women's health and abortion rights a key part of his political pitch to Democratic voters. He's facing former U.S. Tom Perriello in a June primary.
