Multiple correctional officers resign and retire early from JTVCC

The Delaware Department of Correction confirms that eight correctional officers have resigned from the James T. Vaughn Correctional Center since February 1st.

Chief of Community Relations Jayme Gravell says eight additional correctional officers have submitted paperwork to retire, with one retiring immediately. A teacher additionally chose to retire, bringing the total number of resignations and retirements to 17.

All but two of these employees worked at JTVCC, Gravell said.

These resignations and retirements have all come since the incident earlier this month where inmates took several JTVCC staff members hostage, killing correctional officer Lt. Steven Floyd.

A correctional officer also suffered injuries last week after being assaulted by an inmate and struck in the face.

However, despite these leaving employees, the Department of Correction reports that up to 40 new correctional officers will graduate from correctional employee initial training (CEIT) in March.
