Monday Memo – February 13, 2017
MONDAY MEMO
TO: ALL STAFF
FROM: KATHLEEN
DATE: 13 FEBRUARY 2017
MEET THE NEWEST MEMBER OF OUR TEAM

Brandon Bossert, MMJ/Producer, will be joining our News Team on Wednesday. He comes to us most recently from 101.7FM/1150AM WDEL in Wilmington, DE, where he worked as a Sports Journalist and part time News Reporter. He holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Studio Production: Television and Journalism from Wilmington University in New Castle, DE. He was on the Dean’s List numerous semesters and brings with him a wide range of talent and skills including technical writing, digital image manipulation, Adobe Premier Pro, Final Cut Pro and Photoshop just to name a few. Please join me in welcoming him to our Team.
REPACKING = CHANNEL CHANGES
• Late last week, stations in our market received information that, in about two years when the channel “repacking” takes place, all local stations will move to different channels. We knew this was coming and have been told that “smart tuners” will compensate for the change. The reassignment will not affect cable or satellite carriage. This repacking came about as a result of the spectrum auction and is something new for all of us to work through. As you may suspect, the announcement of these switches was made this far in advance so that engineers, when buying equipment, can take into consideration whether or not newly purchased equipment will be compatible with their new assignment as well. FYI, our new channel for 2019 (or thereabouts) will become channel 29. We will still be branded as 47 ABC.
STATION VISITORS!

• Last Thursday, the Salisbury University American Meteorologist Society Club visited the Station. Their tour was hosted by Travis Michels and the group stayed to watch the 5:30 News Hour. After the newscast, they had a Q&A with our talent. Our current Studio Tech and former Weather Intern, Stevie Danielczyk organized the tour. Stevie is still a Club member.
FEBRUARY SWEEPS REMINDER
• The February Sweeps period is well underway. For new employees, this is your reminder that Station “employee(s), or any member of their household(s), may not participate in providing viewership information to Nielsen because of the possibility of conscious or unconscious bias in the reporting of their media behavior”. We take this mandate very seriously and, should you receive any viewership reporting forms, you need to return them to Nielsen with a note explaining that, as a broadcaster, you cannot participate in their survey. In advance, thanks for your attention to this requirement.
AROUND THE STATION
We have some personnel changes coming up and congratulations are in order:
• Elaine Haggerty, National Sales Executive, will be retiring the end of February. Although she will be greatly missed, we wish her the very best and we will think of her often as summer approaches because we know she will be hanging out on one of our fabulous beaches.
• Teri Monahan, Local Sales Manager, will pick up Elaine’s National Sales duties.
• Tamara Horn is moving to the newly created position of Sales Specialist and will pick up many duties currently handled by Teri and Elaine. Tamara’s new cubicle is located directly across from Lindsy’s office; she reports to Teri Monahan.
• Travis Michels, Chief Meteorologist, will also be leaving us the end of the month for a new opportunity. We wish him the very best and are wondering if they have a beach where he is going.
• Daniel Johnson will take over the Chief Meteorologist duties on 1 March and will move to Travis’ evening shift.
• At the same time, Jaisol Martinez Ortiz will move to fill Daniel’s morning shift

IN SERVICE TO THE COMMUNITY
• Our well-publicized Sunday afternoon MPT-produced show “Breaking Heron’s Grip: Road to Recovery”, has stirred a major interest in the community with inquiries about how our community leaders get copies of the show. I have reached out to MPT and they will let us know this week what the process will be. They recognize that it is in our collective best interest to get the special out into the hands of educators and health professionals as well as support and treatment groups. If you receive an inquiry about how to get a copy, please forward it to me or send the name and contact information of the interested party and I will see they get the information as soon as it becomes available.
• We will once again be offering the “Free Tuition for a Year, Books & Laptop” contest to our viewers. This is done in partnership with our long-time partners Bank of Delmarva and WorWic Community College. Unfortunately, employees of our organizations are not eligible to win, but you can remind your friends who may be interested to enter. Promotions will air May to September and full rules will be on the website closer to the time.
• Today at noon, Sarah Truitt and I will attend a meeting at Headquarters Live where Gov. Hogan and Comptroller Franchot will be speaking.
• On Wednesday, Sarah and Josh will set up for 2017 Spring Job/ Internship Fair at Salisbury University and Sales Managers will pick up at 2PM. The Job Fair runs from Noon to 4PM at Maggs.
