Maryland releases 2015-2016 domestic violence statistics

Today, the Maryland Network Against Domestic Violence released 2015 to 2016 statistics on domestic violence fatalities.

And the network says that although numbers haven't drastically changed over the last couple of years, there has been overall improvement in the last 20 years.

Between July 2015 and June 2016, 55 individuals died in Maryland due to domestic violence.

47 ABC spoke with Michaele Cohen, the network's executive director,  who said that even though there are still similar numbers of victims year to year,  more people are seeking out and using services to prevent these scenarios.

“Our goal is to always get people to those services and to those protections. Because they don't protect everybody in every circumstance,” Cohen said.

“I mean we can't say that yet. But we certainly do believe that people who get that help are more likely to survive and not be killed or seriously injured.”

Cohen says that thoroughly educating the public on domestic violence will hopefully help lower the number of victims.
