Local horse rescue group in need of volunteers

Sunday morning for Lorraine Truitt was like most days.

Truitt, the founder of Horse Lovers United Inc.,  checked on the group's horses. Horse Lovers United is a Salisbury based horse rescue and adoption group.

16-year-old 'Nice Threads' and 27-year-old 'Rising Ty' are just two of ten horses that the organization is looking after.

"I know that 'Nice Threads' raced around here locally, like at Harrington and ocean downs," says Truitt.

Truitt says the majority of the horses that come through her farms are former race horses. She tells us when she was younger her family was involved in horse racing. When she was with her grandparents, she quickly learned that race horses have a bleak future when their racing abilities come to an end, which led her to creating this organization back in 1992.

"Once I got behind the scenes I found what happened to horses that are not competitive.  A lot of them go to the slaughter. I'm trying to save as many possible from going there," says Truitt.

Truitt admits taking care horses is not an easy job , so she relies on volunteers  which Truitt says she is in desperate need of.

So far, Horse Lovers United has helped 150 horses in the past 25 years. She believes the organization gives them a second chance after their racing careers are over.

"Mainly we need some people that can groom them right now and just spend time with them . I mean they're getting the basic care, getting fed, but they really need someone to interact with them," says Truitt.

Truitt says they currently have about six volunteers. They are looking to have at least 20 volunteers to care for the horses that are located on farms throughout the Delmarva peninsula.
