IRSD to host first of four referendum workshops

The Indian River School District is set to host its first of four public workshops Wednesday night for taxpayers to weigh in on next month's referendum.

The meeting scheduled for 6 p.m. at Lord Baltimore Elementary School in Ocean View.

The district is proposing a tax increase of 49 cents per 100 dollars of assessed property value, meaning the average district taxpayer could see an increase of more than 95 dollars in his or her property tax bill.

If passed, interim superintendent Mark Steele says the measure is expected to raise more than 7 million dollars in local revenue. Majority of the projected revenue would go toward supporting enrollment growth and staff.

The school district has three more workshops scheduled:

– February 16: Georgetown Middle School, 6:00 p.m.

– February 23: Indian River High School, 6:00 p.m.

– February 27: Sussex Central High School, 6:00 p.m. (Prior to Board of Education meeting.)

The referendum is scheduled for March 2 between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.
