Georgetown restaurant donating proceeds to slain officer family

The massive outpour of support for the family and friends of a slain Smyrna correctional officer continues with fundraising efforts underway at a Georgetown restaurant.
Lieutenant Steven Floyd, 47, died last week after an inmate uprising at the James T. Vaughn Correctional Center.
The 16 veteran of the Delaware Department of Corrections was one of four prison employees held hostage during a 19 hour stand-off.
Kelly Sharp says she never had the opportunity to meet Lieutenant Floyd, who was promoted posthumously from his rank as Sergeant; however, the Georgetown restaurant manager says his death has hit home.
"I know that he was a local Georgetown guy, and I do know his sister," says Sharp.
Sharp is the restaurant manager of the Brick Hotel on the Circle in Georgetown and tells 47ABC they started discussing ways to raise funds for his family this past Saturday.
Ten percent of all dinner checks between 4 p.m. and 9 p.m. on Tuesday and Wednesday will go into a fund designated for Floyd's family.
"Georgetown itself is such a small and close knit community that I think even folks that didn't know Lieutenant Floyd are really feeling his loss," explains Sharp.
At a press conference last Thursday, people who did know Floyd like Geoffrey Klopp, president for the Correctional Officers Association of Delaware, described him as a dedicated family man.
"He cared very much about his family. His grandkids, he worked hard so his kids could go to college and they could be what they wanted to be," Klopp described.
Sharp says she hopes funds raised this week can help the family Lieutenant Floyd worked so hard to support.
"Coming in and showing your support even if you don't know the family or you didn't know Lt. Floyd himself, it just really contributes to the community," she says. "The family is certainly feeling the support of the community."
The restaurant tells us there is no set goal of exactly how much they would like to raise, but that any little bit helps. They are also accepting donations outside of the dinner checks.
