Fundraising event held for Downing Project

Sunday afternoon, a fundraising event for the Downing Project was held at the Bennie Smith Life Cultural Center.

Community members accepted donations towards the project  which was formed after a brutal attack in Princess Anne in December. The money raised will be used to cover traveling expenses for the grandmother of the Sells children, as well as any medical expenses.

Authorities say their mother's boyfriend allegedly attacked the children and their mom with a hammer. Their mother Airelle Sells died soon after.

"It could have been one of our kids. And I would want somebody to help me and show me that love and that support. It's all about the children and wanting them to get better, and come home," says Pecola White, one of the event organizers.

White tells us her goal is  to raise at least $1,000 for the project.
