What you should have in your home when a winter storm hits

When winter weather hits, it's important to be prepared. With Friday's forecast showing snow for the weekend, one of the stores in Salisbury that was busy with shoppers is none other than Ace Hardware.
General Manager Kelly Jarvis says they've been preparing for the storm for a week. But you can only be so prepared because Jarvis says they ran out of their 20 pound ice melt bags Friday morning. Another shipment was called in for that afternoon.
Jarvis tells 47 ABC, "I just think with the forecast and the numbers solidifying and getting a little higher, people are getting a little worried so they're coming in and stocking up to be on the safe side."
Another store feeling the heat: ACME in Salisbury. Shelves were stocked with the common items usually bought before a storm, including water, bread, and eggs. If you're wondering what experts say you should buy, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have a winter weather checklist.
It says in the event of a storm, you should have a week's worth of food and safety supplies. If you live far from other people, have more supplies on hand. Their list includes everything from canned or no-cook food like crackers and dried fruits. You should also have baby food and formula on hand if there is an infant in the household. And a big one–being stocked up on prescription drugs and other medicine.
When it comes to cleaning up after the storm, Jarvis says if you plan to shovel, be extra cautious.
Jarvis tells 47 ABC, "Right now with the totals that were getting and the temperature not being able to climb, and they're talking about freezing rain mixed in, it can be very dangerous out there. If you don't feel comfortable going out–don't –especially for the elderly and the very young."
