Viral video has folks thinking of proper measures to keep children safe

According to the U. S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, unstable TV's and large pieces of furniture kill a child every two weeks.

A recent viral video of a two year old saving his twin from under a dresser has shaken up folks and caused them to re-think the proper measures to keep their children safe.

"It's very easy for children to get into things and it doesn't take them a long time, they're curious they're into everything," says Jennifer Johnson, from the Wicomico County Health Department.

Johnson tells 47 ABC,  incidents like these are common amongst children under the age of six. She says the best way parents and guardians can avoid them is by child-proofing their homes.

She says one way of doing that is by getting down on the floor and seeing what would catch a child's attention.

"Because when we are walking around we see totally different things. So if we get down on their level then we can see if there are cords hanging. Even just little things on the floor," says Johnson.

Johnson also recommends that parents anchor furniture such as dressers and entertainment centers.

Justin Barnes, the VP of Operations from  FurnitureLand tells 47 ABC  parents can get  anti-tip restraint kits.He says some of manufacturers are already including them in their products.

"They would generally be in the drawer or they could be in the back stapled to any item that  you would buy," says Barnes.

The biggest thing Barnes recommends is that folks read manufacturer manuals and warnings posted on products that can pose a hazard to a child. He says taking a few minutes to anchor an item can prevent a tragic tip-over that only takes seconds.
