UPDATE: Commissioner sentenced on extortion charges

Princess Anne commissioner Lionel Frederick has been sentenced on extortion charges for trying to extort another town official before an election.
Frederick, 25, was sentenced to six months in jail plus $2,500 restitution Monday; however, the sentence is pending the outcome of his appeal process.
Monday's sentence, which would not apply should the conviction be overturned following an appeal process, stems from a November 2016 conviction after a May 2016 arrest.
Authorities say Frederick had contacted fellow town commissioner Dennis Williams about a potential potential candidate running for Williams' seat. Court documents find Frederick said he would convince the candidate to not run if he [Frederick] was paid 5,000 dollars.
In court Monday, a judge admitted this was an "interesting" case given Frederick's success as the youngest serving town commissioner for Princess Anne; however, he noted Frederick also had multiple run-ins with the law since first elected in 2014.
In September 2014, Frederick had faced charges of assault in connection to spraying mace in a man's face.
Frederick will have 30 days to appeal.
