Toroid plans Salisbury expansion, 50 new jobs over three years

An electrical transformer manufacturer says they are expanding their presence in Wicomico County, launching a new division and hiring 50 new employees over the next three years.

According to Toroid Corporation President Katarina Ennerfelt, the expansion of Toroid Panel & Harness, LLC is "the result of both our strategic plan to diversify our products as well as the presence of an experienced and skilled workforce on the Eastern Shore."

Toroid Corp. says some of the workers displaced by last year's closing of Labinal Power Systems' Salisbury plant will be hired.

"Toroid has been a great partner for Wicomico County and for Maryland for more than two decades," Maryland Commerce Secretary Mike Gill said. "We're pleased to support their efforts to strengthen that relationship by assisting with the launch of their new division in Salisbury.

Officials say Toroid P & H will invest more than $250,000 at the new Salisbury site where the company is leasing 10,000 square feet of space.

The Maryland Department of Commerce says they approved a $100,000 loan through the Maryland Economic Development Assistance Authority and Fund to support Toroid's expansion.

Wicomico County, through the Salisbury-Wicomico Economic Development Corporation additionally provided a $100,000 loan.

Toroid will also be eliible for multiple state and local tax credits, officials said.

"The principals of Toroid P & H are no strangers to Salisbury, having started several manufacturing business here," Salisbury Mayor Jake Day said. "We thank them for their confidence and participation in growing our city and continuing the ascension of the Salisbury job market."

According to their company website, Toroid was founded by Swedish immigrant Gunnar Ennerfelt in 1982. A satellite plant was first opened in Salisbury in 1988 to supplement another plant in Bowie. In 1991, the Bowie plant closed and sales and administration were moved to Salisbury. By 1994, a 20,000 square foot plant was up and running in Salisbury, employing 60 people.
