The local standing up for racial justice group or SURJ as they go by, took part in a "reclaim MLK" event Monday in Salisbury.

Participants held up black lives matter signs and others outside near Salisbury University, but the meaning behind the event focused on bringing back what Dr. King stood for according to the groups leader, James Yamakawa.

Yamakawa said many now think King's message was only about unity and love, but it was much more than that. Yamakwa calling King an activist and one who often challenged whites to do a better job in helping with the civil rights movement.

"He was an exemplar, but he had more to say than what you would normally hear how it is, so look for it. Do the research," Yamakawa said.

Yamakawa encouraged anyone to find out more about what their message is by visiting the SURJ Delmarva Facebook page found here.
