Senator Carper advocating for an adequate replacement for Affordable Care Act

Delaware U.S. Senator Tom Carper spoke at Nanticoke Memorial Hospital January 13, 2017 to highlight the importance of improving the affordable care act.

Senator Carper says, "The repeal of the Affordable Care Act could put this hospital in jeopardy. Across the county, there are hundreds maybe thousands of rural hospitals that are going to be in great jeopardy just staying in business and being able to provide healthcare in small rural communities."

The room was filled as many listened about how the Affordable Care Act without an adequate replacement, would be detrimental to the health and well-being of patients.

Carper says one of the hidden virtues of the Affordable Care Act is if the focus is on prevention and wellness.

He states we should spend time to keep people healthy and well rather than have to spend a lot more money when they get really sick.

The President of Nanticoke Memorial Hospital says the Affordable Care Act, also referred to as ACA, has helped 32 million Americans.

We even spoke to one of those patients , Nicholas Serratore, who uses the plan.

He tells 47 ABC how his dad died of colon cancer, which made him more aware of his own potential health risks.

And the ACA provides Serratore with constant colonoscopies and check ups.

Serratore says, "I would like to see this plan continue, I know that everything has glitches but I don't think by just taking it away just like that, is a good thing without any backup plan or anything, I think people need to work on this together completely."

Senator Carper hopes that congress will have some common sense when it comes to making these decisions that will affect millions.

Carper tells us rather than simply repealing the Affordable Care Act, he hopes they can improve on it and make it better.
