School safety is part of IRSD’s current expense referendum

The Indian River School District is hosting their current expense referendum in March.
Eight cents of the proposed 49-cent property tax increase will be used for school safety.
This will generate an additional $1.2 million dollars per year for security initiatives, including the 15 school safety monitors.
If the referendum does pass, it will allow them to have even more bus cameras.
Currently, about 60% of their busses have those cameras.
They are also hoping to add security Walkie Talkies, which activate an intruder alert.
It would lock down the building immediately in a press of a button.
Another feature, upgrading their entry doors, making it even more difficult for people to enter.
47 ABC spoke to the Assistant Superintendent, as he tells us their biggest concern is the safety of the children.
We are told there are two major ways to keep the school safe: putting up resistance and reduce response time.
Voting for the referendum will take place on March 2nd, 2017 from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.
Residents of the Indian River School District, who are U.S. citizens and at least 18 years of age are eligible to vote at any one of the following polling places: East Millsboro Elementary School, Georgetown Elementary School, Indian River High School, Long Neck Elementary School, Lord Baltimore Elementary School and Selbyville Middle School.
Proof of identification or residency is required at each polling place.
