Police investigating Georgetown airplane fire at Sussex County Airport

Delaware police are investigating an airplane fire that broke out shortly after the aircraft took off from a Georgetown airport.
Police say the incident occurred at roughly 2 p.m. on Saturday when 59-year-old Donald Byrne took off in a single engine airplane from the Sussex County Airport. Police say just after the aircraft reached 1400 feet, the cock pit filled with smoke and Byrne was able to turn the airplane around. Police say Byrne jumped from the airplane as it landed at the airport, just before the aircraft came to rest in a grassy area and burst into flames.
Byrne was taken to a hospital and treated for non-life threatening injuries. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
