Local law enforcement head to Washington, D.C. for the presidential inauguration

With just three days until the inauguration many local law enforcement officers are on their way to Washington, D.C. to help keep the peace.

Many of Wicomico County's finest are headed to Washington, D.C. this week.

"Several weeks ago now, we were contacted by the Metropolitan Police Department and asked if we would be willing to assist them in providing security for the upcoming presidential inauguration," explains Sheriff Mike Lewis.

Wicomico County Sheriff Mike Lewis says it was a no brainer agreeing to help out.

"We're very excited to be up there, very excited to witness this historic event."

And it's not just a couple officers going, over two dozen personnel from Wicomico County's Sheriff's Office will be making their way to the U.S. Capitol Wednesday morning.

It's something Sheriff Lewis tells 47 ABC is quite the honor.

He explains, "There are about 18,000 law enforcement agencies in the United States, of those 18,000 law enforcement agencies, there are about 765,000 law enforcement officers. A little over 100 agencies have been asked to participate in this historic event."

They also won't be taking it lightly as they will be stationed in the thick of things. According to Sheriff Lewis, the officers will be stationed on Pennsylvania Avenue in close proximity to the Trump Hotel.

"We have been told our areas are considered to be a very active area and a very fluid area and we were told to be prepared for anything."

Sheriff Lewis adds, he wouldn't want to be anywhere else. They plan to do whatever it takes to make it a smooth transition of power from President Barack Obama to President-Elect Donald Trump.

"You will not see a repeat of Baltimore City in Washington, D.C. where there was an order given to stand down, not going to happen. We're not going to put a stand down, we're going up there to ensure a peaceful transition of power," explains Sheriff Lewis.

And to commemorate the big day, Wicomico County Sheriff's Office made special badges that they will wear with pride this Friday.

There's something for the soon-to-be 45th President of the United States too.

"We also got a special badge from the Wicomico County Sheriff's Office with the president's name on it that I hope to present to President Donald J Trump."

Over the next couple days, the 26 officers will go through an extensive credential and deputy process by the U.S. Marshals.
