Local farmers receive award for environmental efforts

In Delaware, two local farmers were recognized by the first state's Department of Agriculture for their environmental efforts on their farm in Milford.

Poultry farmers, Ted Layton and Scott Willey, are co-owners of  T& S Farms where they grow broiler chickens for Allen Harim Foods.

Layton and Willey invested in poultry farming just over three years ago as a side job to their construction business when the housing market crashed.

Now with four poultry house and over 100,000 birds, their side business has grown exponentially. Although being environmentally friendly is a top priority.

That's why they installed a manure shed, composter, and a stormwater farm to improve water quality and reduce nutrient runoff.

Its these efforts that clinched their spot to receive the Environmental Stewardship Award on Monday at Delaware Ag Week.
