Following Wednesday's passing of former Delaware Governor David P. Buckson, Gov. Carney has ordered U.S. and Delaware flags to be flown at half-staff starting on Friday, officials said.

"David was a dedicated public servant who served our country in World War II and served our state with distinction as a judge, attorney general, lieutenant governor and as our governor," Gov. Carney said.

Buckson, a Republican, served as the 63rd Governor of Delaware for a brief period between December 30, 1960 and January 17, 1961 following the resignation of Gov. J. Caleb Boggs when he was elected to the U.S. Senate.

Buckson is additionally remembered as the founder of Dover International Speedway and Dover Downs in the late 1960s.

"It was his original vision that led to the birth of Dover Downs and many Delawareans have benefited over the years as a result," President and CEO of Dover Downs Gaming and Entertainment, Inc. And Dover Motorsports, Inc. said Wednesday.

Buckson was 96.
