Domestic violence suspect arrested after barricading himself in home for six hours

In Dover, after nearly a six-hour standoff, a man was arrested in his home January 21, 2016.

According to police, around 9:30 a.m. 33-year-old Joseph Cornell was chasing a female victim while striking her several times during a domestic dispute.

Officials say from there, Cornell then forced the victim in the home and locked the door, refusing to answer when police arrived on scene.

Despite numerous efforts, the suspect refused to answer.

Police say despite several attempts to make Cornell surrender after four hours, the Special Operations Response Team deployed gas into the residence but the suspect still remained inside.

The team then entered despite Cornell blocking the doorways with furniture.

We are told they located him in the attic. Cornell has been charged with third degree assault and resisting arrest.
