Crime spree ends for Frankford men accused of Millsboro robberies

Matthew Edwards, 19, and Zack Umstead, 20, of Frankford, Del.

Delaware State Police say two Frankford men were arrested for their roles in two Wednesday early morning robberies.

19-year-old Matthew Edwards and 20-year-old Zack Umstead were taken into custody without incident, police said.

The first robbery reportedly happened shortly before 3:43 Wednesday morning at the Royal Farms on Del. Route 24 in Millsboro. One masked suspect armed with a handgun demanded money from the register and fled in an unknown direction, police said.

The second robbery happened less than an hour later at the Dash Inn just north on the same road. Once again, police say a masked and armed man demanded cash. The clerk allegedly fled the store while the suspect stole the store's cash.

Police say they received a description of the suspects' vehicle, a Kia Rio, and soon found it on Del. Route 24 west of Warrington Road.

Troopers reportedly flashed their lights to stop the car, but the Kia did not pull over immediately. Officers say they saw handguns thrown out of the car's windows before the vehicle finally pulled over.

The occupants, Edwards and Umstead, were promptly arrested.

DSP says they soon discovered the Kia Rio itself had been stolen from a Frankford home earlier that evening before the men committed the robberies. The recovered handguns additionally were found to be stolen from a Bethany Meadows home on Tuesday.

Edwards and Umstead are charged with first degree robbery, possession of a deadly weapon during the commission of a felony, second degree conspiracy, motor vehicle theft, receiving a stolen firearm and multiple other charges.

Both men were committed to Sussex Correctional Institution, Edwards on a cash bond of $164,500 and Umstead on a cash bond of $183,002.
