UPDATE: A Harrington police officer was involved in fatal crash involving a pedestrian

An update in the fatal car crash involving a Harrington police officer and a pedestrian.

The Harrington police officer has been identified as 47-year-old Carl J. Klotz.

Harrington police say earlier Saturday morning around 1:41 a.m., a 32-year-old Christopher Thompson was driving a Dodge pick up truck on state SR 12 east of Felton. The truck was pulling a 30-foot trailer.

Due to a mechanical problem with the trailer, Thompson pulled onto the right hand shoulder of the roadway. However, a portion of the trailer remained in the eastbound lane.

Officials say Thompson then placed a floor jack under the driver’s side of the trailers tires and as he was standing in the eastbound lane of the road, he was struck by a 2015 Chevrolet Tahoe.

The driver of the Tahoe was 47-year-old Carl J. Klotz, an off-duty male police officer from the Harrington Police Department.

Thompson was pronounced dead at the scene.

We are told that Thompson was dressed in all dark clothing at the time. The officer was not injured.

The City of Harrington say they extend their condolences to all involved in this accident.
