Two Millsboro high schoolers have taken care of a veteran’s cemetery for years

Two Millsboro high school girls have been taking care of the Veteran's Memorial Cemetery for the past four years.
47 ABC was there for the beginning of their restoration process of the cemetery four years ago. And now, the girls, Brittany Ritter and Karrsin Mitchell are about to head off to college.
But what started out as a volunteer effort through their Millsboro Middle School's National Junior Honor Society grew with passion.
Both girls had family members who have previously served for our country and Ritter's grandma was even laid to rest in this gravesite.
Ritter tells us it was really important to serve those who have served us.
She says, "I think that's a cause that anyone can relate even if they don't have any friends or family in the service, it's just taking their time and their families to all their effort to help our whole nation."
But four years ago, the cemetery looked nothing like this.
What used to be empty gravestones has now been decorated with flowers and some with wreaths.
And it goes beyond that as the girls were able to create a welcoming opening center for the whole site, which has benches, flowers, and a statue.
There are also commemorative stones in the ground and the girls tell us it is a great center for those to grieve in the time of need.
Mitchell tells 47 ABC because of their efforts, they have seen the community become more involved.
They say they weren't expecting what started as a volunteer project would end up becoming a long-standing commitment. And even a bonding experience for them.
Mitchell states, "Our entire mantra for our community service project that's turned into something we do for enjoyment has been serving those who have served us."
The girls say when they come back from college, they will continue to visit the cemetery. They also say it would be great to see someone take over this project to commemorate those who have served for our country.
