SU Police awarded for crime prevention outreach

The Maryland Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services awarded the Salisbury University Police Department with an award recognizing the department's crime prevention measures.

SU Police received the award at the 37th annual Governor's Crime Prevention Awards ceremony held Tuesday morning in Glen Burnie. The award is given by the MDPSC to police departments that participate in outreach programs such as public training activities and crime prevention media campaigns.

SU Police Chief Edwin Lashley says the university administration has been supportive of the department's work.

"We place a premium on educational programming for our students to help avoid unsafe situations or to be prepared if they occur," Chief Lashley said.

In the past year, SU Police gave presentations to the Salisbury University community on personal safety, substance abuse, acquaintance rape and emergency situations. SU Police additionally upgraded the campus video surveillance system and went forward with their campus crime watch program.
