Rehoboth boy donating care kits to those in need

Daeveon Deshields is like any 11 year old boy.  He loves baseball and enjoys spending time with his grandfather. What sets Daeveon  apart from most children his age is his passion to help those in need.

"Every time I got older and older to where I am now I keep thinking to myself I should be helping out these other people because I'm blessed," says Daeveon.

Since Daeveon was 4 years old he's participated in numerous community service events to benefit the homeless, and after noticing that their was a need in his community he founded his own community service initiative called Project HOOP. HOOP stands 'Helping Out Other People'.

"Every time we were out to the store there's always somebody out with a sign saying I will help for money or work for money or work for food," says Daeveon.

With the guidance of his grandfather, Daeveon has spent his weekends collecting toiletries and clothing to pack kits for the homeless and those in need.

Diaz Bonville, Daeveon's grandfather says,"Everyone needs the basic essentials like toothbrushes and toothpaste, that sometimes we take for granted.

Daeveon has collected enough to fill 1,000 gallon size plastic bags to give away just in time for the new year.

Friday afternoon he showed 47 ABC the baskets that were overflowing with kits and  were ready to be donated.

"I feel great about doing it," says Daeveon.

Daeveon and his grandfather tells us they hope Project HOOP will inspire other children his age to lend a helping hand to those in need.

Daeveon and his grandfather will be donating the kits this Sunday to a ministry in Rehoboth Beach.

For anyone looking to donate to Project HOOP you can contact Diaz Bonville at 302-645-7544 or email him at diaz122455@aol.com.
