with the alleged fugitive drowning in the cambridge creek. we’re told the man jumped in the water to avoid the cops. but there are still many unanswered questions in this case. 47 abc’s reporter justina coronel is at the generation three boat yard — where the incident unfolded this afternoon. justina, you spoke with cambridge police. what did they tell you? emily — we’re told the man who died today — is believed to have been a suspect in a number of other burglaries. but at this time — that’s all they’ll tell us. what we know for sure — is that the suspect drowned in the water here. he jumped off the pier right behind me. and we’re told it took nearly a half hour for rescue teams to find his body — which ended up being just about 20 feet away. track 1 this cell phone video — captured a little after 12 noon — shows search teams on cambridge creek. they were looking for a robbery suspect that apparently jumped in the water to evade police. about 30 minutes later — they pulled the man’s lifeless body out of the water. this all started at a house on cedar street — where cambridge police were called for reports of a burglary in progress. at this time the subject was seen, male suspect seen coming out of a second story window, the subject was asked to stop, he refused and he began fleeing on foot. track 2 lieutenant justin todd tells as he was running away — the suspect was identified as hispanic. during the time that he was running, he had a hand bag in his hand, he was trying to get inside of it and he jump into the pier. track 3 investigators say from the pier — he jumped into the water. at that point — the policeman following — stopped. we’re told he didn’t jump into the water. his next course of action was to call for backup — to surround the area — in an effort to find and catch the suspect. natural resources police responded. we’re told the water in the creek is approximately 7 to 8 feet deep. but todd says due to the mud in the water– it made it very difficult to locate the subject at the bottom. unfortunately they were unable to, the body was recovered approximately 30 minutes later, and was pronounced deceased by the medical staff at that time now – we’re told – cambridge police hope to release the deceased man’s name in the next 24 hours. they say they are waiting to identify next of kin– and an autopsy will determine the exact cause of death. emily? thanks justina– now for our viewers at home and for us here in the studio– we can see that it’s quite windy out there– any idea what the water conditions are like? is it cold? yes and as a matter of fact– the water temperature of the cambridge creek today is estimated to be around 48 degrees. and experts say cold water — less than 70 degrees — can lower your body temperature, causing hypothermia. hypothermia can cause you to pass out — and in the water — that can be deadly. also — i’m told there was a small craft advisory earlier today– which could indicate the waters had more intense currents and waves. alright, justina — thank you so much for your report. 47 abc’s justina coronel — reporting live from cambridge tonight. police do add that they recovered a handgun was in a bag the suspect was running away with. investigators say a preliminary analysis of the gun matches it with a weapon used in a robbery last week. also in dorchester county — an east new market woman
