One million travelers expected in Delaware this holiday season

Last year, more than a million drivers went through Delaware's toll plazas during the holidays. The Delaware Department of Transportation (DelDOT) says it expects similar numbers this year.  DelDOT says the number of travelers begins to go up on December 24th and says high until January 1st.

Officials advise that drivers travel at non-peak hours, so they don't get stuck in traffic.  They also advise travelers to not drive when tired, even if that means switching drivers or stopping for coffee.

DelDOT spokesperson Jim Westhoff says the state is preparing for the holiday travel season. "We suspend our construction projects during the holiday season so that we can have all lanes open and have as much traffic moving as safely as possible," he said.

Westhoff also said an E-Z Pass can make a nice holiday gift. Officials say it reduces distracted driving by eliminating the need to hunt for money as travelers approach toll booths.
