More details emerge in death investigation of alleged burglary

The police pursuit of a presumed burglary suspect ends with the alleged fugitive drowning in the Cambridge Creek.
The deceased man is believed to have been a suspect in a number of other burglaries. We’re told it took nearly a half hour for rescue teams to find his body, which ended up being about 20 feet away.
Cambridge Police dispatched to the 300 block of Cedar Street to a possible burglary taking place around 11 a.m. The suspect fled by foot jumping out of a second story window. Officers chased the suspect and he did not obey any of their orders.
Lieutenant Justin Todd tells as the suspect was running away, the suspect was identified as Hispanic. Todd says during the time that he was running, he had a hand bag in his hand and he was apparently trying to get inside of it and he jumped from the pier into the water.
At that point, the policeman following the suspect stopped. We’re told he didn’t jump into the water.
His next course of action was to call for backup to surround the area in an effort to find and catch the suspect.
Natural resources police responded as well.
We’re told the water in the creek is approximately 7 to 8 feet deep. But Todd says due to the mud in the water, it made it very difficult to locate the subject at the bottom.
Cambridge Police say they made every effort to help the suspect.
Water temperatures of the Cambridge Creek estimated to be around 48 degrees.
Experts say cold water less than 70 degrees can lower your body temperature, causing hypothermia.
Hypothermia can cause you to pass out and in the water, that can be deadly.
Also, there was a Small Craft Advisory earlier today, which could indicate the waters had more intense currents and waves.
Police say exhaustion from the chase could have led to the suspect drowning.
Officials do add that they recovered a handgun that was in a bag the suspect was running away with. Investigators say a preliminary analysis of the gun matches it with a weapon used in a robbery last week.
We’re told Cambridge Police hope to release the deceased man’s name in the next 24 hours.
They say they are waiting to identify next of kin and an autopsy will determine the exact cause of death.
