Mardela Girls Beat Pocomoke 38-36

The Mardela Warriors girls basketball team beat the Pocomoke Warriors 38-36 today in the second round of the Governor's Challenge, for their first win of the season. Mariah Sterrett would knock down the go-ahead jumper with 6 seconds left to lift her team to the big win.

The first quarter ended with Pocomoke leading 7-5. Pocomoke led by as many as four points in the second quarter. Mardela pulled away away, outscoring Pocomoke 14-7 in the frame. Kayla Cook drilled a jumper at the buzzer at the end of the first quarter. Cook had 18 points and 20 rebounds for Mardela. Teirra Thomas matched Cook's 18 points for Mardela, and notched six rebounds. Mardela had a commanding second half, leading by 10 with 5:33 remaining in the third quarter. Mardela also had the edge on the boards, out-rebounding Pocomoke 40-36. The game would be tied in the final seconds before the ball was knocked loose from the Warriors. Sterrett would pick up the loose ball, and knock down the short 12 footer for the go-ahead basket, which proved to be the game-winner.
