(AP) – Officials say a dead manatee was found floating in waters near Dundalk.

The Maryland Department of Natural Resources tells local media outlets that veterinarians are examining the animal to determine how it died.

Natural resources officials say it was the third time a dead manatee has been found in the bay. They say a citizen who spotted the manatee in Colgate Creek notified authorities last week.

Officials say Maryland waters are too cold for the animals this time of year. Manatees are typically found in Florida, Georgia and South Carolina but some have been seen in recent years in the Chesapeake Bay.

A spokesman for the natural resources department tells The Baltimore Sun reports that the manatee was 9 feet long and 800 pounds.
