Locals in Pocomoke City get into the holiday spirit

It all started with an idea to give back to the citizens of Pocomoke City.
Pocomoke City mayor, Bruce Morrison, says, “I came up with the idea of doing the Mayor’s Old-Fashioned Christmas and I started it six years ago and it’s been highly successful. It’s something I get back to the community and get back to the people of Pocomoke and I enjoy doing this.”
It started very small, but has grown each year, now with over 700 people showing up for the Mayor’s Old-Fashioned Christmas.
Put on by the city, folks are able to embrace the holiday spirit with everything from free food and drinks to arts and crafts, even a visit from Santa.
There’s something for the whole family.
This is our favorite thing to do in Pocomoke,” says one mom.
Her 9-year-old son chiming in, “I like singing in choir a lot.” And his sister’s favorite part, seeing Santa Claus.
The whole community takes part in the festivities and even supports some local causes.
The chili contest benefiting the local volunteer fire company and the holiday wreath auction with proceeds going to the community garden.
Project coordinator, Karah Lacey, says it’s a big hit for the locals and the city.
“People love Christmas and people love gathering together and the fact that we get to give it to them and you know have these refreshments and goodies and Santa Claus and all that fun things here for them to take advantage of, I think they really appreciate it,” explains Lacey.
“It’s really nice. It’s a really nice community between the parade and like a said I didn’t realize it was like this it’s really neat, it’s fun,” says one local.
