Humane Society of Wicomico County gives animal safety tips for the cold weather

Due to the cold weather and with temperatures dropping, the Humane Society of Wicomico County gave some helpful tips to protect our furry friends.

The Humane Society tells us many people have pets that stay outside but they are recommending they be brought inside.

If you do keep your animals outside, they need proper shelter with a windbreak on it, due to the windchill.

Animals can get frost bite and hypothermia, so make sure to look for signs like shivering or change in behavior.

We are told when the weather drops to 20 or 30 degrees, small dogs or short haired dogs are even more at risk.

The director, Aaron Balsamo, says if anyone needs a cage for inside their garage they can call the Human Society.

The Humane Society does tell us dogs such as huskies or northern tier breeds may be more built for this winter weather. But even though that is the case, it's still a better idea to bring them inside.
