Voters out before polls open in New Church, VA

The day that many have been anticipating is finally here, Election Day. Polls in New Church, Virginia at their local fire station opened up at 6 AM Tuesday morning and assistant Chief of the Precinct Brenda Laws tells 47 ABC, they had 10 people waiting outside before they got here.

Laws says for the folks in Virginia that plan on voting need to bring some form of photo ID with them. Whether it’s a license, a work ID, or even a student ID. Laws adds she’s expecting a very busy day.

Laws tells 47 ABC, “We’re excited and were hoping it’ll be a busy day all through the day. We’ll probably work another hour, hour and a half to get all of our figures together to get packed up so we’re anticipating a long day.”

As of 12PM, New Church fire house saw 752 votes, 213 of which were absentee. They saw a 27.41% turnout. Numbers for all of Accomack county wont be out until Virginia polls close at 7PM.

Laws also tells 47 ABC that for any handicapped folks or people that cant make it out of their cars, she or another election official will come out to their car to help them vote. Polls in Maryland and Delaware close at 8 PM.
