UPDATE: Mother says she never gave child Benadryl

handy. arguably one of the key witnesses testified today – the mother of the infant handy is accused of murdering. handy is facing one count of murder by abuse -for the 10-month-year old infant that died while at her home day care. 47 abc’s julian sadur was there for the mothers testimony and joins us live now in studio – julian what did the jury learn? emily – you’ll recall- according to the state – the alleged cause of death in this case was benadryl. the state saying the child had concerning amounts of diphenhydramine – an active ingredient in benadryl – in his system at the time of death . today on the stand – the mother said undoubtedly – that she had never given the child benadryl – and that in fact shenever even had the medicine in her house. during the mothers roughly two hours of testimony – the state pressed the fact that the she – the mother – was extremely careful with her son in terms of his health. the mother even saying – that she originally did not want her child in daycare- because she was skeptical of trusting anyone she didn’t know with her child. however during the defense’s cross examination – they revealed that the mother told detectives in an interview at the time of the child’s death – that she thought handy was a good caretaker. and that in fact she could tell her son liked her – and liked the way he cared for her because of the way he responded to her. the mother also testified that she was nave to think that at the time. now as to how the infant got the benadryl in his system – we still haven’t heard that come out in testimony. however judging from the expected timeline of this case – the state will only have until the end of the week to prove to the jury beyond a reasonable doubt that handy is responsible for this child’s death – emily – back to you. thanks julian. that trial will resume tomorrow morning – the state has told 47 abc they hope to finish calling their witnesses by wednesday at the latest. wednesday at the latest. one local resident is likely celebrating this week after winning a large scratch
