Sussex Central Runs Into Sallies Buzzsaw In Semis

Sussex Central’s boys soccer team had a break through season in 2016, finishes the regular season with a 13-3 record on their way to winning the Henlopen North. They found out Wednesday night though that they still have a ways to go to get the state title they want.

The Golden Knights incredible season ran into a buzz saw in the form of Sallies in the DIAA DI State Semifinals, falling 8-0. The Golden Knights fell behind 2-0 in the first 2 minutes of the game and were never able to gain traction as they watched their season slip away.

Sallies would score just a minute and a half into the game after a cross into the box was sent home by Jason Blackwell. Just 30 seconds later and Gavin Ford would fire in a free kick from just outside the box. For the next 10 minutes, it looked like Sussex Central had settled in. They ball possession switched to the other side of the field and the Golden Knights got a couple shots on goal from Yunior Cruz and Kel Ordonez Garcia. But Sallies was just getting started. An own goal would push the lead to 3-0 before Sallies would add a penalty kick from Cole Bouchard. Sussex Central would find themselves down 6-0 at the break before giving up another PK in the second half before ending the game with another beautiful shot from the left side to the upper 90 for Casey Kurlej.
