Queen Anne’s Roars Past Huskies Into Programs First State Title

History was made Monday night for the Queen Anne’s field hockey program.

But the final page hasn’t yet been written on this season.

The Lions posted a shutout in their 3-0 win over Patterson Mill to advance to their first ever 1A State Championship match and are now just one win away from being home the title to Centreville.

The teams would spend the first 10 minutes of the match getting a feel for each other before finally Queen Anne’s would go on the attack. At the midway point of the half, they would finally break through after Sara Walford would get the ball in front of the cage and fired one past the keeper and into the back of the cage. The lead would hold til late in the first half with the Lions were back for more. With under 5 minutes to go in the half, they drew a corner before the ball would be sent into the box and finished off by Kaitlin Karns. The Huskies would battle in the second half, starting to control more and more of the possession. Eventually they would be able to draw a few corners themselves, firing a couple shots on frame and crosses through the circle. They tested Queen Anne’s keeper Emily Lanehart.

She was ready.

The junior keeper would send every shot back, coming up with several great saves to help her team maintain their two goal advantage. Eventually the Lions were able to come up with steals and flip the field in the hurry on the counter push. With under a minute to play they would get into one of these transition pushes and it would lead to the final score of the game by McKenna Blick. Time would expire, giving the Lions their historic win.
