Queen Anne’s Finishes 2nd On The Scoreboard But 1st In Record Books

The dream season may not have ended the way Queen Anne’s field hockey would have wanted, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t still plenty of things they’ll be able to smile about down the road. The Lions fell in the 1A State Championship 2-0 Saturday morning to Liberty, capping off the greatest season in program history.
Liberty would come out of the gates and immediately strike first. just under two minutes into the match and a break away up the right side would be fired in from Brooker Heffler. The rest of the half was very back and forth. The Lions would generate several good scoring opportunities as Gabrielle Corder and Sara Walford each would fire shots on frame. Every shot though was met with a save by Liberty’s keeper Grace Fenner. Queen Anne’s would head into halftime down 1-0, but feeling right in the game.
The second half was a different story. Liberty began to control the ball possession and force the issue. Finally with under 15 minutes to play, they would add their insurance goal. A pass would be sent to the far post where Hannah Miller was abel to get a stick on it and send it home. Queen Anne’s wasn’t willing to go away quietly though. They would push back and begin to generate some strong scoring chances of their own. It looked as though they had finally gotten on the board after Corder took a shot from the top of the circle that found the back of the cage. However the goal was disallowed as it never touched a stick from inside the circle. Time would expire, handing the Lions a disappointing loss to finish off what was a season to be proud of.
2016 saw Queen Anne’s win the Regional Title for just the second time in program history, and watched them make the State Title game for the first time ever. The Lions shattered the program single season scoring record on their way to finishing with one of the best records ever.
Queen Anne’s finished second on the scoreboard Saturday morning, but the team will forever be remembered for finishing first in the Lions record books.
