Queen Anne’s Claims Regional Title With Shutout Over Pocomoke

If you want to be the best, you got to beat the best.

Wednesday afternoon, the Queen Anne’s field hockey team proved they are ready to compete for a state title after posting a shutout win over the defending 1A State Champion Pocomoke Warriors. The Lions advance to the final four for just the second time in program history.

Queen Anne’s wasted no time before going to work. Just over two minutes into the match, they would draw a corner. The pass would find Sara Walford and she would fire one into the back of the cage. Then just 6 minutes after that, the Lions would double their lead with a cross would find Walford in the circle and she would be able to sneak one in past the keeper. The Warriors looked to find an answer at the other end, getting a couple nice crosses from Peyton Becker. Each ball though either went straight through the circle, or the ensuing shot would be turned away from Emily Lanehart. The Lions would take a 2-0 lead into the half, but look to extend their lead in the second.

Eight minutes into the second half, Conner Allen would get the ball at the top of the circle and a send an aerial on frame. Warriors keeper Dom Farrace would get a stick on it to save it from scoring, but the rebound would deflect off a Warriors defender, and fall into the back of the cage. Pocomoke then turned up their urgency and were able to fire a couple more shots on goal, but Lanehart would turn each away. Queen Anne’s would then seal the deal, after a loose ball in the circle was slammed home by Sarah Bowyer, sending the Lions to the Final Four and ending the Warriors quest for a repeat.
