OCMD beach replenishment schedule to remain on track

Ocean City town officials have recommended to continue the current beach replenishment schedule.

Terry McGean, city engineer for the town of Ocean City, says sand replenishment is typically done every four years during the fall season; however, changing the schedule was considered to move it earlier.

McGean tells 47ABC replenishment work has been prohibited during the months of July and August since the year 2002, because of the heavy tourism season which could be disrupted if work was done on the beach.

At a city council meeting Tuesday, officials announced majority of the beach has met its minimum requirement of sand height.

“The recommendation is that we continue the prohibition against the work on the beach in July and August. That at this point, it is not needed,” says McGean.

Officials note if there is severe winter weather that causes erosion or damage, they may revisit the idea of replenishing before fall of 2017.
