Mothers-to-be in Haiti due in coming months amid ruins, donations still needed

It’s been more than a month since Hurricane Matthew ravaged parts of Haiti and killed hundreds in its path.

Since then, several recovery efforts have been attempted but Delaware Family Christian Assembly in Milford is still collecting items to send.

Reverend Amos Regsume says he has close friends and family who have seen the first hand horrors. They say the situation in Haiti has gotten worse despite the storm having passed.

“People cannot find a place to sleep, they have to sleep in cave,” Reverend Regusme says.

Mothers-to-be may now also be struggling in the ruins.

The Associated Press reports even in the best of times, pregnancy and childbirth is risky in Haiti. It has the highest maternal mortality ratio in the Western Hemisphere.

According to the U.N. Population Fund, nearly 14,000 women are due to give birth in the next three months amid widespread shortages of food and clean water in the country.

The church’s continued efforts have gained the support of the Milford City Council.

“Pampers, all of those types of items that are needed. We need those baby products, formula, if anyone has any formula that we can send to those newborn babies,” says councilwoman Katrina Wilson. “We need anything we can get for the people.”

Council Wilson says they’re thankful to receive support from so many in the past few weeks. but they could always use more.

Reverend Regusme tells 47ABC donations will be collected through the week before Thanksgiving.

We’re told the church is also looking into partnering with either the American Red Cross or the Dover Air Force Base to deliver the items once they are done collecting.

If anyone would like to donate, they are asked to contact Pastor Troy Hazzard at 302-463-5031.
