Local reaction to Fidel Castro’s death

Fidel Castro’s death caused reactions around the country and even one local Salisbury man tells us his thoughts of the death of the Cuban leader.

Luis A. Luna said the death of Castro was a long time coming. He says it will take some time for a change in the government, but the death of the leader is the first step to that change.

Luna tells 47 ABC that his parents sent him and his brother to the United States for freedom during his regime.

His parents weren’t able to flee until years later. Luna says their family was able to reunite, but unfortunately many did not have the same opportunity.

He explains that many Cubans have suffered, thousands have died, and many have fled for freedom during Castro’s time.

Luna hopes due to Castro’s death, Cubans will be able to have their freedom back. Luna says hopefully Cubans will see freedom in their lifetime. He states, freedom always wins and it’s just a matter of how long it takes for the people of Cuba to see their freedom soon.

Senator Ben Cardin even released a statement saying:

“The news of Fidel Castro’s death brings with it an opportunity to close the deep divisions that have been suffered by Cuban society and by Cuban Americans in the U.S. For Castro’s purported goals of social and economic development to be attained, it is now time for a half-century of authoritarian rule to give way to the restoration of democracy and the reform of a system the has denied Cuba’s citizens their basic human rights and individuals freedoms. As the United States awaits a new Administration, we must continue our partnership with the Cuban people as they seek to build a more hopeful future for their country.”
