Local dietitian gives advice on diabetes prevention

Atlantic General Hospital in Berlin has been hosting free workshops for almost a year now. It’s called Medical Monday, in hopes of educating the community on anything from dementia to diabetes to prostate cancer.

With today being National Diabetes Day, registered dietitian, Darlene Jameson is helping locals detect and prevent diabetes.

She tells 47 ABC the three lower counties, especially Somerset and Worcester, have extremely high numbers of people diagnosed with diabetes.

The best way to prevent diabetes is to maintain a healthy weight and stay active.

Of course, that’s easier said than done, but even people who can’t go on a run can find alternatives like walking.

“For people with even less mobility than that, chair exercises, sitting and doing you know, you can march in place you know while you’re sitting in your chair. You can use weights whether it’s cans of food or different things you can find around your house. You can do arm exercises, you can do leg lifts, you can use stretching bands to use when you’re doing the exercises to increase your muscles,” explains Jameson.

When it comes to a healthy diet, Jameson says the best thing to do is to plan ahead.
