Kent Island Punches Title To Title, Tops Mavs

The Kent Island field hockey teams dream season isn’t over, nor complete, just yet. The undefeated Bucs will compete for the 2A Maryland State Title Saturday afternoon after they defeated Manchester Valley 5-1 Monday night.

The Bucs would jump out to a lead just over 10 minutes into the match after drawing the first corner of the game. The ball would be send to Abby Carpenter who would blast a shot into the back of the cage from the left side. Just minutes later, Kent Island would be able to draw another corner. The ball would again be sent to Carpenter, but this time she would work her way into the circle before sending a cross that would be sent home by Celina Kaufman. The Mavs weren’t ready to go away just yet. They would fight back to gain possession, eventually drawing a corner of their own. The ball would be sent to the top of the circle where Meghan Harmon would rip a shot. The ball would get deflected off a defenders stick, soar into the air and just past the keeper and into the back of the goal. Kent Island’s lead would be cut in half headed to halftime, but they would respond quickly in the second half. Just three minutes into the half, Kent Island’s defense would force a turnover deep in Manchester Valley’s side of the field. Kaufman would step into the circle, and send a backhand shot to the near post for the score. The flood gates then opened as Carpenter would add another off a corner before Emily Keller would add the final score of the game.

Kent Island will now face off against Hereford on Saturday at 1:30 at Washington College.
