Dorchester Co. woman sentenced to life in prison

On Monday, 20 year old Kryshonna Jones was sentenced to life in prison, this comes after Jones was found guilty of the fatal stabbing in January of 34 year old Justin Barney. Barney was the father of Jones’ baby.

During Monday’s sentencing hearing the state asked for life in prison, while the defense asked for a slightly lesser sentencing; life with a chance of suspending a term of years if good behavior was served. The defense claimed that Jones was capable of ‘redemption and rehabilitation’, however the state referred to her as a ‘risk to public safety’. The judge ended up siding with the state.

Before being sentenced Jones apologized to Barney’s family for their loss and stated, “If I could take this back I would.”

Barney’s family tells 47 ABC his death has left a hole in their lives.

“Justice has been served but it’s never going to be over. This family is torn apart,” says Kay Murray, who is a family member of Barney.

“The biggest part of all is his children missing him and not having him there when they need him,” says Tasheka Gibson, a cousin of Barney.

47 ABC also caught up with the Dorchester County State’s attorney who tells us off-camera  this was a “fair sentencing after a tragic set of events”.
