UPDATE: Suspicious package delivered in Salisbury deemed non-threatening

Police in Salisbury confirmed for 47ABC that they are investigating the delivery of a suspicious package.

Officials say this package was delivered on Northgate Drive, and was reported around 2PM.

In relation to this incident, Salisbury Fire tweeted, “Units responding to a report of a Citizen Assist on Northgate Dr in Salisbury.”

We have a crew on route to the scene and will release more information as it becomes available.

UPDATE from 47ABC’s Julian Sadur:

47 ABC arrived on the scene while police were still investigating the threat. Officials told our crew that they responded to the building around 3PM to a report a suspicious package.

Apparently the package was a rather large cardboard box, about six inches high and twelve inches long. What made the package suspicious, is that it was addressed to an employee that no one at the building had ever heard of.

47ABC was told that the bomb squad used equipment to analyze the package, and found unidentifiable suspect items. Out of precaution, they remotely rendered the package safe.

MD Bomb Squad Commander Jack Waldner explained, “We remotely opened the package with a tool. It had nothing to do with explosive energy using to destroy the components.”

So, officers told us that the contents ended up not being as suspicious as they originally thought.

Bomb squad commander Jack Waldner says his team was on high alert because suspicious packages have been sent to three other social security administrations in recent days, including one location in Baltimore. In Baltimore, the suspicious package was found to be an IED, an improvised explosive device.
