Survey finds top three mistakes made by teens learning to drive

As we approach National Teen Driver Safety Week, AAA is reminding parents they play an important role in preventing deadly mistakes when their teens get behind the road.

They recommend parents stay actively involved in coaching their teens through the learning-to-drive process.

Over the past five years, AAA reports teen drivers were involved in nearly 14,000 fatal crashes.

In 2014, an estimated 970,000 young drivers were involved in police-reported crashes. This resulted in more than 3,000 deaths and nearly 400,000 injuries.

In the survey “Skills of Novice Teen Drivers”, 140 driving instructors revealed the common mistakes by teens when they are learning to drive: speeding, distraction, and poor visual scanning.

According to AAA, teen drivers have higher rates of crashes per mile than any drivers of any other age group.

National Teen Driver Safety week starts this Sunday, October 16.
