SU issues a traffic advisory for Seagull Century on Saturday

Salisbury University says that they have put in place a traffic advisory for Saturday because of weather conditions.

According to the University, about 7,000 cyclists are set to participate in the 28th Seagull Century bike ride, and because of the continued flooding and issues with getting places after last week’s rain, route changes are being made.

Officials say riders will not be going into Snow Hill or using Byrd Park to rest as was previously planned. Event organizers are reportedly keeping informed about the weather; however participants are being told to check the Century website for the most recent information about routes and the ride itself.

By SU, people should expect heavy bike traffic from 6-9AM, primarily on Route 13, Milford Street and South Division Street. South Division Street between College Avenue and Milford Street is only open to Century parking traffic during that time. Officials say, additional parking is available at James M. Bennett High School.

Bateman Street will reportedly be closed to all cars during the day, and Maryland State Police will be at the Route 13 Intersection from 6AM until 6PM to help with pedestrian safety. Officials say cyclists will be using the university’s underpass going eastbound in the morning and westbound in the afternoon.

Traffic restrictions closing off southbound traffic from East College Avenue until South Division Street should be anticipated during the afternoon. Furthermore, officials say drivers may not want to go near Milford and Wayne Streets, and the roundabout in Fruitland.

Cyclists are expected to go through three routes in Wicomico, Somerset, and Worcester counties. They are also set to go directly through Princess Anne, Pocomoke City and Berlin. 2016’s rest and water stops, where cyclists will gather, include: Washington High School, Furnace Town, Cypress Park, Newark Park, Assateague Island State Park, and the Powellville VFW.

Maryland State Police and other area police will reportedly direct traffic on Route 12/Snow Hill Road at Route 354/Nassawango Road, Route 113 at Germantown Road and Route 376.

Saturday afternoon, bicycle traffic is anticipated on Mount Hermon Road.

Century coordinators are recommending that cyclists and drivers use caution.

After the ride, parties and other festivities are on SU’s campus mall.

Bicycle traffic will be congested by campus from 3-6 PM. All riders should be off the roads by dark.

Friday afternoon and evening, visitors will spend most of their time at Maggs Physical Activities Center and the south lawn of the Patricia R. Guerrieri Academic Commons, along with using the Commons Dining Hall off Camden Avenue throughout the weekend.
