Local Humane Society explains Halloween pet safety tips

At the Humane Society in Wicomico County, locals were able to play with the animals or bring their own for their annual Halloween adoption event this weekend.
Folks had the opportunity to look at all the animals up for adoption, snack on some Halloween goodies, and dress up their own pets in animal Halloween costumes.
Some pets already came in character for the event, like Lily , who was adopted from the Humane Society in March of this year.
The executive director for the Humane Society, Aaron Balsamo, tells 47 ABC there’s no harm in dressing your pet up for the holiday, but if your cat or dog doesn’t seem to like it, be considerate and take it off.
Despite costumes not being a big threat, Balsamo says there are safety tips pet owners should remember on Halloween.
Balsamo says, “There’s a lot of candy out there especially chocolate that can be toxic to both dogs and cats so you want to be mindful if you bring candy home, or if your kids bring it home to make sure that the animal does not have access to it because you don’t want something bad to happen. Another big thing is if you’re going to have trick or treaters come into your house, you want to take your pets and put them in their kennels or in another room in the house so they won’t be by the door.”
Balsamo explains putting your pet in a different room away from trick or treaters can avoid your pet getting scared or angry at certain costumes, so it’s better to be safe than sorry.
