Girls Bracket Governors Challenge
Mardela
The Warriors graduate a couple of their top guards from a year ago in Taylor Ross and Arieonna Joynes. The torch will now be passed to a couple of their returning rising stars in Armani Banks & Kayla Cook. The Warriors look to be in a rebuild mode compared to where they were a few years ago, but are always a tough out in the 1A.
Linganore
The Lancers are coming off an impressive season, making it to the regional Semifinals in the 3A. The team moves on from their senior captain Karly Johnson.
Langley
The Saxons are coming off a tremendous season in which they were the 6A State Runnerups, finishing with a 25-6 record. The team moves on from key players such as Lizzy Shamloo and Stephie Sipple. However they do return a number of good players and are expected to be a force again this year.
Oakdale
The Bears will have new leading scorers this year after graduating Cameron Pitts and Jackie Lamont. The program has been one of the more consistent in the 3A, making deep runs in the state tournament the past few season. This years team figures to be no different.
James M. Bennett
The Clippers will be a relatively unknown team coming out of the Bayside South. Bennett struggled in the win column a year ago and graduated a couple of their better players in Breanne Hall and Brianna Brown.
Walkersville
The Lions make their return to the Governors Challenge for their third straight year. The team moves om from 6 seniors a year ago, including Ariona Johnson and Mckenzie Mathis.
Pocomoke
The Warriors are in full rebuild mode after graduating one of the best senior classes in years for the program. Dynaisha Christian, Shayla Jones and Tymera Deshields, who accounted for nearly 90 percent of the scoring. The door opens now for reserve guards such as Laquasia Johnson and D’naisa Jones to burst onto the scene.
Parkside
The Rams made a good run in the Bayside South in 2015 led by strong play in the post from Kayla Handy and Da’Jah Purnell, The team will now lean heavily on Sarah Dabipi who showed flashes of her potential a season ago.
McDonogh
McDonogh has been a power house program in the east coast for years. They will be returning Taleah Dixon, one of the top players in the entire state. They held onto the No. 1 ranking in Baltimore the entire 2015 season. They are expected to remain the team to beat in nearly every tournament they enter.
Walt Whitman
The Vikings are coming off a tremendous season in which they were crowned the 4A State Champions. They return one of the top players in the state in Abby Myers who is committed to Princeton.
Sanford
The Warriors are coming off a great season, making it all the way to the state championship in Delaware before falling to Ursuline, finishing with a 16-4 record. The team was led by Chrishyanah Alston who has since graduated. However they do bring back Olivia Tucker who won the 3-point competition last year as a freshman. On top of that, Lauren Park is expected to step in to a big role in her sophomore season as well.
Thomas Wootton
Coming out of Montgomery County, the Patriots have always played in a tough conference and a tough schedule. They struggled in the win loss column, finishing with a 8-15 overall record. The team only graduated one senior from a year ago and are expected to be a veteran, strong team this upcoming season.
Stephen Decatur
The Seahawks graduated the greatest scorer in school history in Dayona Godwin who finished with over 2,000 points. While the team will look for its new leader on the offensive end, they bring back nearly all of the surrounding supporting cast. The team will now be led by Lexie Van Kirk, Madison Jones and Amya Mumford.
St. Andrew Episcopal
Andre Foreman makes his return to Salisbury to lead his team against his alma mater in Stephen Decatur.
Southern Garrett
The program has established itself as one of the top 1A teams in Maryland. The Rams have made it to the state championship for three straight years. They return Kamrin Weimer.
St. Joes By The Sea
The Sea Vikings are coming off a rebuilding season in which they went 7-18. The young team from Staten Island got valuable experience last season and returning all but four players from a year ago.
Snow Hill
The Eagles are coming off a rebuilding season and will hope to lean on their experience for the upcoming season. Their top guard from a year ago in Dishon Wise has since graduated and left a big hole at the point guard position.
Thomas Stone
The Cougars return to the Governors Challenge after making a great run in 2015, winning their bracket. The program figures to be tough again this year after graduating just three seniors from a year ago.
Sherwood
The Warriors are a team hard to figure early on. Six seniors graduated a year ago after helping them to a strong showing in the Governors Challenge, earning a win over Bennett.
Wi-Hi
The Tribe will have two of the better post in the conference this year between Jazymn Moye-Watson and Sherriah Mills. If the Indians can find some guard play, they should be able to make some noise in conference play, as well as the tournament.
